This is an antique 2 section Japanese stacking clothing chest called Kimono Kasane Isho Tansu that originated from the Matsumoto region of Japan from Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's). 

Constructed entirely from Paulownia wood (Kirinoki) it features an auspicious lucky treasure bag motif lockplates.  All of the iron fittings were hand made. 

Originally used for kimono storage, it can be used for the same purpose as well as storage for clothes or linens.
