This is an antique 1 section Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tansu that originated from the Matsumoto region of Japan.  It was constructed from Keyaki (Zelkova), Suginoki (Cryptomeria) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods from Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's).

Merchant chests were displayed with pride by the owner of a shop to give customers the impression of success and longevity to the business establishment.  It was almost always situated in a prominent location of the store to catch the view of the client as a form of business advertising.
