Antique Japanese Shishi Lion Statue, Showa Era (SKU 25D-478)

Substantial stone pair of guardian shishi for temple or garden entry.

Carved in dense stone, this powerful pair of Japanese lion-dogs, or komainu/shishi, once flanked the approach to a shrine or important residence. Each guardian sits alert on block-like paws, with deeply carved manes of swirling curls, muscular chests, and expressive faces that convey both ferocity and protection. Their weathered surfaces and remnants of old pigment speak to many decades of outdoor use and quiet watchfulness.

Viewed from the side and rear, the sculptor’s attention to detail is evident in the flowing tails and rhythmic scrollwork that echo cloud motifs seen in traditional temple architecture. One lion shows losses to the jaw and muzzle, and both have wear at the top of the head, consistent with age and exposure, adding to their wabi-sabi character. Ideal as an impressive antique Japanese garden focal point or flanking an interior entryway, this komainu pair brings an authentic sense of Showa-era craftsmanship and spiritual guardianship to any setting.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
