Antique Japanese Lacquered Haribako Sewing Box, Taisho Era (SKU 25D-458-2)

Early 20th-century kurodame lacquer document and accessory chest with hinged writing surface

This handsome antique Japanese lacquered box is a compact chest of drawers, likely used as a small tansu for writing tools, documents, and personal effects. Finished in a deep black-brown urushi lacquer that reveals warm reddish undertones, it features five front drawers with delicate iron pulls and side carry-holes, making it easy to lift from shelf to desk in a traditional washitsu interior.

The top opens with a split, hinged lid that slides back to reveal a shallow compartment and a removable flat board, ideal as a writing surface for a suzuri-bako ink set or as a tray for jewelry and keepsakes. Rich patina, small lacquer losses, and age-softened metal fittings testify to its Meiji–Taishō era craftsmanship while giving the box the wabi-sabi character prized in Japanese antiques.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
