Antique Japanese Nesting Box Dame, Lacquer, Taisho Era (SKU 25S-421-B)
Architectural stack of 7 nesting kiri-dame boxes in deep red-brown lacquer.
This impressive set of antique Japanese nesting boxes forms a striking stepped tower when fully stacked, showcasing the refined simplicity of Taisho-period design. Each rectangular box is finished in a warm, translucent red-brown lacquer that allows the natural grain of the wood to show through, creating a quiet harmony between material and finish.
Known as kiri-dame, such multi-tiered lacquer boxes were traditionally used for food service, storage, or presentation during gatherings and seasonal celebrations. Disassembled, the 7 pieces nest compactly into a single unit; displayed, they become a sculptural focal point that speaks to Japanese notions of order, modularity, and understated elegance.
