Antique Japanese Kumiko Ranma Transom Panel — Architectural Wood Decor, 1920, Taisho Era (SKU: 24N-73-1)

Finely crafted kumiko ranma panel with bold black frame and intricate geometric lattice.

This antique Japanese ranma (欄間) showcases exquisite kumiko zaiku latticework, assembled without visible nails to create a rhythmic pattern of intersecting squares and octagons. The warm natural wood of the inner panel contrasts elegantly with the deep, almost lacquer-black outer frame, giving the piece a refined Taishō-period aesthetic suited to both traditional and modern interiors.

Originally installed above sliding doors or between rooms to allow light and air to flow, this wooden transom now works beautifully as wall art, a headboard accent, or a unique architectural feature in a tokonoma-style display. The crisp joinery and well-preserved surfaces highlight the skill of the craftsman and make this ranma a striking example of early 20th-century Japanese design.
