This is an antique Japanese Ko Tansu, small chest from the Middle Meiji period (1880's-1890's).
This special style is called Bo-tansu, chest with the bar in the middle which works as a lock with a key so the drawers behind the bar can not be opened unlsee the bar is removed.
The Ko tansu is a very versatile chest. In Japan it had many different uses depending on style, design, or wood type. It is made of Paulownia (Kirinoki ) wood. The compact size and combination of different size of drawers make this piece a great addition for a desk, living room, or anyplace that needs a small piece to add interest and store your various accessories.
