This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's). It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use. Made of 100% Paulownia wood (Kirinoki), the iron fittings were all hand made.
Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
