This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from Late Meiji period (1890's-1910's). It was used to store letters, documents, books and other valuable items since most of the compartments have locks (no keys). Made of Paulownia (Kirinoki).
Contemporary uses for this piece for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
