This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's). It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use. It is made of Kiri (Paulownia) and Keyaki (Zelkova) wood.
Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
