Antique Japanese Kitchen Chest (Mizuya Tansu) — 1880, Meiji Era
A Functional Masterpiece of Hinoki Elegance
This Antique Japanese Mizuya Tansu, dating back to the Meiji era (circa 1880s), is a stunning example of traditional Japanese cabinetry. Handcrafted from beautiful hinoki cypress, this two-piece kitchen chest was originally used for storing tableware, cookware, and ingredients in a Japanese home. Today, it stands as both a functional storage solution and a statement piece of architectural beauty.
The upper section showcases intricate joinery, decorative slats, and elegantly grained sliding panels that reveal open storage within. Below, six drawers with original iron pulls offer organization for utensils or essentials, their darker wood grain creating a striking contrast with the lighter hinoki frame.
The lower section features classic slatted doors that slide smoothly to reveal a large interior with removable shelving, adaptable for modern use—be it as a kitchen sideboard, display cabinet, or bar setup. Every surface is kissed with the soft patina of age, enhancing the natural warmth and character of the cypress wood.
