Antique Japanese Kitchen Chest (Mizuya Tansu) — 1880s, Meiji Era
A Storied Heirloom from Japan’s Culinary Past, Reimagined for Modern Living

This striking antique Japanese mizuya tansu, crafted in the 1880s during the Meiji Era, radiates warmth, history, and purpose. Once the heart of a traditional Japanese kitchen, this piece was designed for both storage and ritual—where every drawer had a role and every sliding door concealed cherished wares.

Originally part of a larger Gifu-style mizuya tansu, this is the bottom section, thoughtfully adapted for contemporary use. We added a thick solid wood countertop and installed four sturdy legs, transforming it into a freestanding piece—ideal as a buffet, sideboard, or console chest.

The chest’s balanced design features an array of deep drawers and smooth-gliding sliding doors, including elegant shoji-inspired panels with wooden lattice work backed by washi paper. Its robust frame, warm cedar tone, and meticulous joinery embody the enduring artistry of Meiji-period woodworking.

Whether displayed as a functional storage centerpiece or admired for its architectural beauty, this tansu brings an authentic layer of character and soul to any interior.
