Antique Japanese Kimono Chest (Tansu) — 1920s, Taisho Era (SKU A307)
A Chest of Grace and Quiet Nobility
This stunning vintage Ishō Tansu (衣装箪笥), handcrafted in the 1920s during Japan’s Taisho era, radiates timeless refinement and natural poise. Used traditionally to store layers of kimono, this chest was once an indispensable part of daily life—holding not just fabric, but memories, rituals, and generational care.
The chest is crafted from lustrous kiri (paulownia) wood, selected for its lightness and resistance to humidity—ideal for protecting fine textiles. The gracefully paneled upper cabinet doors open to reveal ample inner storage, secured with beautifully intricate black iron escutcheons and a functioning key. Below, three spacious drawers offer balance in both form and utility, each adorned with elegant iron pulls. The clean lines and warm woodgrain reflect a spirit of simplicity, restraint, and Japanese harmony.
