Taishō-era style Japanese gong with richly carved phoenix and wave stand
This impressive antique Japanese gong is suspended within a lacquered wooden stand, lavishly highlighted in gilt. The hammered metal gong hangs from bright vermilion cords with silk tassels, while the stand is finished in a deep red that recalls temple furnishings and gagaku (court music) instruments. A boldly sculpted phoenix in flight crowns the frame, its feathers flowing into stylised waves that continue along the lower frieze.
The stand rests on scrolling feet with brass or bronze appliqués engraved in fine arabesques, giving the piece a regal, architectural presence even when silent. Ideal as a statement decorative object or for gentle ceremonial use, this gong brings the atmosphere of a Taishō-period shrine or theatre into a modern interior.
A striking Taishō-inspired gong that captures the drama and elegance of traditional Japanese ceremonial art.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
