Antique Japanese Ikebana Flower Basket (SKU 25D-483)

Sculptural double bamboo ikebana basket on natural root base

This expressive antique Japanese flower basket is woven in rich, dark-stained bamboo and cradled by a dramatic natural root base. Two gourd-like baskets rise in succession, their openwork plaiting catching the light and evoking the movement of climbing vines, a classic motif in traditional ikebana baskets.

The lower basket contains an inset cylindrical bamboo liner for water, while the upper form is ideal for airy branch arrangements, allowing stems to be threaded through the lattice. Weathered surfaces, minor losses to the bamboo strips, and the rugged, untouched character of the root all contribute to a wabi-sabi presence that harmonizes beautifully with seasonal flowers or as a standalone tokonoma display.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Early 20th century (Taishō era, c. 1920s)
  • Material: Bamboo and natural wood root
  • Use: Ikebana flower arranging; tokonoma or alcove display
  • Features: Double basket composition; hand-woven openwork plaiting; integrated bamboo water liner; sculptural driftwood-style root base; warm aged patina with visible wear consistent with use
  • Dimensions: 15"W x 9"D x 15"H
  • Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate surface wear, small losses and abrasions to bamboo, and natural irregularities to the root base

A characterful piece of Japanese bamboo art that brings an authentic, organic presence to any ikebana or interior setting.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
