Antique Japanese Ikebana/Kakehana Flower Basket, 1920s (SKU 25D-071-3)

Taishō-era kakehana style bamboo basket with natural root base and removable bamboo water tube

This sculptural antique Japanese flower basket combines finely woven smoked bamboo with an expressive natural root base, evoking the rustic elegance of nageire and tea-ceremony aesthetics. Two gourd-like woven chambers rise organically from the dark, weathered wood, creating a dynamic silhouette that appears to grow from the mountainside.

A separate cylindrical bamboo insert serves as the water container, allowing the outer basket to remain light and airy while protecting the weave during use. The rich reddish-brown patina of the bamboo, the asymmetrical composition, and the interplay of solid root and openwork weave make this Taishō-era piece a striking choice for ikebana display or as an art object in a wabi-sabi interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
