Antique Japanese Ikebana Flower Basket (SKU 25D-071-2)

Taishō-era bamboo ikebana basket with removable bamboo cylinder insert

This elegant antique Japanese flower basket is finely woven in a tight asanoha (hemp-leaf–like) pattern, reinforced with slender bamboo ribs and finished with a raised lip to frame the floral display. The tall, rectangular body is complemented by a graceful arched handle bound with rattan, giving the piece both strength and a refined sculptural silhouette ideal for the tokonoma or tea room.

A separate smoked-bamboo cylinder (otoshi) nests inside the basket to hold water and protect the interior weave, a traditional detail seen in quality ikebana baskets from the late Meiji to Taishō era. The underside features an attractive crossed-bamboo bracing, while subtle patina, minor wear, and warm coloration attest to decades of careful use and add authentic wabi-sabi character.

  • Origin: Japan

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
