Antique Japanese Ikebana Flower Basket, Taisho Era (SKU 25D-071-1)

Dynamic Taisho-era kakehana basket marrying bold bamboo plaiting with a dramatic natural root handle

This expressive antique Japanese flower basket is a striking example of Taisho-period ikebana design. Wide, flame-toned bamboo strips are vigorously interlaced in an almost sculptural swirl, creating a rounded body that feels both powerful and fluid, ideal for seasonal nageire or wildflower arrangements.

The rugged, darkened root handle rises in a bold arc, echoing the aesthetics of the tea ceremony and the appreciation of natural, unrefined forms. Subtle age patina, light rubbing to the bamboo, and the warm contrast between the reddish lacquered surface and the deep interior give this Taisho-era flower basket a rich, wabi-sabi presence on a tokonoma or alcove shelf.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
