This exceptionally rare double-sided mizuya tansu showcases the refined craftsmanship of the late Meiji period. The sturdy frame is constructed from hinoki (Japanese cypress), prized for its lightness and durability, while the sliding door panels are crafted from richly grained keyaki (zelkova), giving the chest its warm, striking contrast.
One sliding door set is decorated with traditional auspicious motifs—eggplant, Mount Fuji, and a hawk—symbols of good fortune and longevity in Japanese culture. The tansu features a harmonious mix of sliding doors, latticed panels, and multiple drawers with iron ring pulls, offering both beauty and practicality. Its double-sided design makes it particularly unusual and versatile, suitable for use as a room divider or central storage piece.
An authentic antique with a balance of elegance and utility, this mizuya tansu embodies the artistry of Japanese cabinetry and remains a highly collectible example of Meiji-era furniture.
