Antique Japanese Chochin Lamp Shade, Wood, 1910s, Taisho Era (SKU 25S-470)

This exquisite antique chōchin lantern, dating back to the Taishō era (c.1910s), beautifully reflects Japan’s enduring tradition of lantern-making. Crafted from finely ribbed wood and paper, it exemplifies meticulous handwork and elegant design.

The lantern features the family crest (kamon) boldly painted in black on one side and the family name “齊藤” (Saitō) inscribed on the other. These elements reveal its origins as a personalized household lantern—likely used during festivals, ceremonies, or as a welcoming light at the entrance of a traditional home.

The body is finished in warm natural tones, accented with lacquered black wooden ends and subtle gold embellishments. It retains its original folding structure, allowing the lantern to collapse neatly for storage.

Adding to its rarity, the piece comes with its original black wooden storage case, also marked with the same family crest in gold—an elegant touch that speaks to its provenance and care through generations.
