This is an antique Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tansu that originated from the Kansai region of Japan from middle Meiji period (1880's-1890's). It was constructed out of Cypress (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods and the iron fittings were hand made.
It has a combination of sliding doors and drawers for an abundance of storage space.
Merchant chests were displayed with pride by the owner of a shop to give customers the impression of success and longevity of the business establishment. It was almost always situated in a prominent location of the store to catch the view of the client.
