Antique Japanese Chabitsu Tea Container, 1980s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-199-4)

Warmly patinated wooden chabitsu for storing tea utensils or everyday treasures.

This rounded Japanese chabitsu features a beautifully grained, reddish-brown wood body with a snug-fitting lid, traditionally used to hold tea implements outside of formal chanoyu. The low, circular form and softly beveled rim give it a calm, understated presence that sits harmoniously on a shelf, tansu, or tea table.

Likely from the late Showa period, the container shows gentle wear and small marks consistent with age and use, enhancing the depth of its lacquered finish. Whether used as a functional tea container, for storing sweets, or as a wabi-sabi accent in a Japanese-inspired interior, this chabitsu offers an authentic touch of everyday tea culture.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
