Finely cast Meiji-era bronze figure standing on rice bales and a large sack
This substantial antique Japanese bronze statue captures a figure firmly planted atop stacked kome-dawara (straw-wrapped rice bales) and a bulging cloth sack, symbols of prosperity and well-earned abundance. The sculptor has rendered the layered garments, tied sash, and sturdy boots with crisp, confident modeling, while the soft folds of the draped cloth contrast beautifully with the tightly braided texture of the bales.
Finished in a deep, warm brown patina typical of late Meiji craftsmanship, the piece displays subtle highlights along the edges of the clothing and base, enhancing the sense of volume and movement. The statue’s weighty presence and auspicious subject make it an ideal focal point for a tokonoma alcove, entryway, or curated display of Japanese bronze sculpture.
A classic example of antique Japanese bronze work, ready to bring Meiji-period character and quiet strength to your space.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
