Antique Japanese Bamboo Basket (SKU 25D-351)

Warmly patinated Taishō-era bamboo basket with square base and knotted cord details

This antique Japanese basket showcases a handsome square base that rises to a softly rounded mouth, a form often associated with everyday kago storage baskets of the late Meiji–Taishō period. The body is woven in a tight herringbone pattern from fine bamboo strips, now matured to a rich reddish-brown hue that speaks to decades of careful use and handling.

A reinforced rim, bound with thicker bamboo and encircled by a plaited band, is punctuated by small knotted loops that once secured a carrying handle or suspension cord. Subtle irregularities, surface wear, and age-darkened fibers add authentic wabi-sabi character, making this piece ideal as a sculptural object, a flower basket in the spirit of ikebana, or as a tactile accent in a Japanese, wabi-sabi, or rustic interior.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Taishō period (early 20th century, 1920s)
  • Material: Bamboo

A characterful Taishō-era bamboo basket that brings authentic Japanese craftsmanship and quiet wabi-sabi presence to any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
