Taishō-period wooden andon with shōji doors and original metal candle tray
Crafted in richly toned hardwood, this antique Japanese andon lantern features an elegant octagonal base, slender uprights, and double shōji-panel doors that open to reveal the interior light chamber. The warm patina of the wood, together with the softly translucent paper screens, evokes the intimate glow of early 20th-century Japanese homes and ryokan.
Inside, a raised wooden platform with a simple cross-form support holds the accompanying metal candle tray, while a small drawer in the base offers storage for matches or extra candles. Whether displayed as a sculptural object or gently illuminated with a modern LED candle, this Taisho era andon adds authentic wabi-sabi character and understated Japanese design to any interior.
A refined Taishō andon that brings the quiet atmosphere of a Japanese machiya into contemporary living spaces.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
