This is a 2 section antique Japanese kitchen chest called Mizuya Tansu from late Meiji (1900's-1910's). It was made out of Japanese Cypress (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) wood.
Originally used in a Japanese kitchen to store dishes, cooking utensils, and jars of water collected from the local stream, its contemporary use functions well as a storage chest or cabinet.
