This is a large 2 section kitchen chest called Mizuya Tansu from Middle Meiji period ( 1880's - 1890's). It was constructed using Cypress (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods. Originally kept in an old Japanese country home, it was used to store dishes, pots of water, and eating utensils.

Hinoki wood is commonly used for its beautiful golden brown hues and its clean grain that makes it appealing for furniture and design accents.

It would make a great statement in any room of the house as well as functionality as a storage unit.
