This is an antique Japanese 2 section Mizuya, Kitchen chest from Late Meiji (1900's-1901's). It is made of Suginoki (Cryptomeria) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods.
Mizuya Dansu was used in the kitchen of a Japanese household for the storage of plates, utensils, food items and especially large pottery jars of water since running water was not readily available in the home. Since this tansu has many type of drawers and cabinets, it is very useful for today's modern kitchen.
