This is a vintage Japanese Kimono Kannon Biraki Tansu, a 2 section clothing chest from Taisho period (1910's-1920's). It is made of Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood.
Most all Kimono Chests are made of Kiri since it is a soft wood that breathes, which means it will prevent clothing from molding and is also fire resistant.
The upper section houses Kimono trays which slide out smoothly behind the hinged doors and and 3 drawers on the bottom.
Traditionally used to store properly folded Kimono, these trays are ideal for storing sweaters, shirts, blouses and linens in today's contemporary home.
