This is a vintage 2 section Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).

It is made of a Persimmon (Kakinoki), Horse Chestnut wood (Tochinoki), Paulownia wood (Kirinoki) and other woods. It shows different woods, colors and textures which makes this piece really unique.

The tea chest was typically used in the general purpose room of a Japanese home.  Displayed in a prominent location, its purpose was to display seasonal and celebratory decorations on its shelves and store utensils and items for serving tea and refreshments to guests.
