This is a vintage 2 section Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).

It is made of a Maple wood (Momiji), Horse Chestnut wood (Tochinoki) case and Paulownia wood (Kirinoki) drawer backs.  Typically used in the guest entertaining room of the house, the area behind the glass sliding doors allow for an area where displays can be changed based on the seasons or special holiday celebrations.

The shallow dimension of this tansu allows for placement in even the most narrow of hallways or entryways.
