This is a vintage 2 section Japanese Cha Dansu, tea chest from Taisho period (1910's-1920') used for the storage and display of basic home tea items that were usually placed in the living area where guests could have access and be able to see any Japanese snacks that would be available to them.
Because these chests were often used to display various items and would be always out in view, Tea Chests were usually made of high quality and finely figured woods. The woods used in this tansu are Persimmon (Kakinoki), Paulownia Kirinoki) and Horse Chestnuts (Tochinoki). Kiri wood is very light, fine-grained, soft, warp-resistant and has a high ignition point.
