This is a modern Japanese 2 section tea chest called Cha Tansu. It was constructed out of Horse chestnuts (Tochinoki), Paulownia (Kirinoki) and othetr woods. The Cha Tansu was often used to store accoutrements for guest tea service as well as a cabinet to display seasonal decorations.
