This is a modern 2 section Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu.  It was constructed out of Maple (Momiji), Horse Chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods. 

The fine details incorporated into this piece include sliding doors for storage, a backwards "S" style shelf invoking the image of a cloud, a slatted wood tray for teacup storage, and detailed hardware.  

Traditionally used in the guest entertaining room of the house, the purpose of this Japanese fine piece of furniture was for seasonal display and for storing tea serving accoutrements. The shallow dimension of this tansu allows for placement in even the most narrow of hallways or entryways.
