Antique Japanese Small Chest (Ko-Tansu) — 1920s, Taishō Era
A Light-Toned Classic of Japanese Simplicity in Kirinoki
Crafted during the Taishō Era (circa 1920s), this refined ko-tansu exemplifies the minimalist charm and practical beauty of Japanese cabinetry. Constructed entirely from Kirinoki (Paulownia wood)—celebrated for its remarkable lightness, fire resistance, and soft, golden grain—this small chest is as functional as it is poetic.
Its clean-lined frame houses two sliding doors across the top with elegant round finger pulls, revealing hidden storage behind. Below, five drawers of various sizes offer thoughtful organization, from document safekeeping to personal items. The drawers feature original iron pulls, and several retain their keyhole plates, one with a vintage key and string still intact—adding a touch of nostalgia and authenticity.
With its naturally luminous finish and gentle patina, this piece radiates a quiet dignity. It’s an ideal companion for a serene corner, a tea room, or a modern interior seeking an infusion of history and warmth.
