Antique Japanese Mirror Chest — Wood, 1920, Taisho Era (SKU: 25M-434)
Antique Kyōdai Mirror Chest — Sugi Burl & Bracket Feet, 1920s, Taishō
The gentle arc of a shrine gate in miniature
An arched mirror rises from a low chest of fiery sugi (cedar) burl, its gentle curve recalling a torii welcoming blessings. Beneath, five brass-pulled drawers offer neat homes for rings, essential oils, even calligraphy seals. The cedar’s swirling grain once perfumed a bride’s trousseau room; faint hints of resin still drift when a drawer slides open.
Tapered mirror supports end in delicate finials that turn with fingertip pressure to adjust angle—an early 20th-century ergonomic innovation. Rounded corners soften the silhouette, making this piece as suited to a modern boutique as to a washitsu tatami alcove.
