This is an antique 2 section Japanese stacking lacquer chest called Kasane Tansu from Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's).

Originating in the Mikuni region of Japan this tansu features the unique shapes of lockplates and Hirute style handles.  It was constructed out of Zelkova(Keyaki) wood and  Cryptomeria (Suginoki), the iron fittings were all hand made.

As for contemporary use, it displays well as an elegant highly crafted work of art and it functions as a storage cabinet.  The two sections can be separated for use in different areas of the house.
