This is an antique Japanese merchant writing box called Kake Suzuri Bako from early Meiji period (around 1870).

It was constructed out of Keyakli (Zelcova) and other woods.  

Most likely used by a wealthy merchant, it was used for daily business record keeping. 

 It shows history.
