This is a vintage wooden lacquered Japanese Haribako, sewing box from early Showa period (1920's-1940's). The compact size and combination of drawers makes this piece a great addition to any room decor. It also makes a wonderful jewelry box or a convenient chest to store small work items or accessories.
The original purpose of the Haribako was to store pins, needles, spools of thread, thimbles, a pin cushion and swatches of fabric for a seamtress or housewife. It sometimes comes with a secret drawer which was used to store the cash collected by a seamtress or as a way for a housewife to keep money for a rainy day safely hidden.
