This is an authentic Japanese dry lacquered (Kanshitsu) mask of Karura, sacred bird from mid. 1900's.

Karura mask is used for Gagaku play, is a mythical giant bird that protects the Buddhist faith. His features include pierced, close-set eyes, which stare down toward the tip of a prominent beak that grasps a round bead, and a cock's comb that projects from the crown of the head.

It has some writings on the back, Kasuga Karura Men.

This mask is very rare and great to add to your collection.
