This is a vintage Japanese 1 section tea chest called Cha Tansu. It was constructed out of Persimmon (Kakinoki), Horse chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods from Taisho perior (1910's-1920's).
Originally used for the storage of tea accoutrements for guest tea service, its contemporary function can be used asa small chest to store personal belonging and display decorative items.
