This is an antique rare Japanese unusual Okidoko from Late Meiji period (1890's-1910's). It is an early type of removable alcove formed by placing a simple long low storage chest in the corner of a room and hanging a scroll of calligraphy above it on the wall. A flower arranged in an Ikebana vase was also often added.
