Japanese Kamo Isho Kimono Tansu 2 Section w/ Secret Compartments(23M-A117)
This is an authentic Japanese 2 section stacking Kimono chest called Kamo Isho Tansu from late 1900's. It was constructed entirely of Paulownia wood (Japanese Kirinoki) and it originated in the Kamo region, Nigata prefecture of Japan.
Designed for storage functionality with a minimalist natural wood grain beauty, it uses nearly every inch of usable interior space.
Paulownia was the desired wood for the construction of tansu such as these. The characteristic of this wood allowed for its expansion during humid summer months to seal the drawers and keep the silk kimono dry while during dry winter months, the wood contracted to allow the kimono to circulate air to breath.
This tansu has unique feather. The left and right upper drawer of the bottom section can be secretly locked. The locking tabs can be found by completely removing the center drawer from its compartment and looking within the cavity. Sliding the tabs to the left for the left drawer and to the right for the right drawer will lock them in place.
Originally used to store Japanese Kimono, it would work well in today's home as a clothes dresser or linen cabinet for daily use.
