This is a Japanese 2 section tea chest called Cha Tansu from late 1900's. It was constructed out of dark stained maple (Momiji), Horse chestnuts (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoi) woods.
The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room. It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home. The display area was designed to showcase seasonal or holiday decorative accents such as flower arrangements for the change of season or dolls for Boy's (Children's) Day or Girl's Day festivals.
The shallow dimension of this tansu allows for placement in even the most narrow of hallways or entryways.
