This is a modern Japanese tea ceremony chest called Oki Mizuya Tansu used during the preparation as well as the conclusion of a tea ceremony. It was made entirely of Japanese Cypress wood (known as Hinoki).
Behind the sliding doors hides a spacious interior where the tea accoutrements would be stored. There are wood hooks for hanging the water scoop called Hishaku and a drainage floor protected by a lined drawer where washed and rinsed pottery can be dried.
