Antique Japanese Merchant Chest — Kiri Wood, 1920s, Taishō Era (SKU: 25M-G313)

Drawers like measured footsteps in a bustling machiya shop

Compact yet complex, this Taishō-era merchant choba-dansu once sat near a shop’s entrance, its nested drawers tallying coins and receipts while sliding doors concealed inkstones and ledgers. The asymmetrical façade—a hallmark of Kansai cabinetry—kept valuables close to the proprietor and curiosity at bay.

Sturdy paulownia sides resist insects; iron bracketry protects dovetail joints from the hustle of commerce. Today it makes a charismatic bar, sideboard, or media stand, radiating entrepreneurial spirit and impeccable joinery.
