This is an antique Japanese Mizuya, a two section Kitchen chest from the Late Meiji period (1890's-1910's). This is made of Suginoki (Cryptomeria) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods.
Mizuya Dansu was used in the kitchen of a Japanese household for the storage of plates, utensils, food items and especially large pottery jars of water since running water was not readily available in the home. Its construction included using through mortise and tenon joinery which adds to its strength and durability for years to come.
It is quite functional for the contemporary home since its beauty is matched by its substantial storage capacity. The sections can be separated for use in different rooms of the house or one section can be hung on the wall as a cabinet right above the other section which would act as a sideboard or buffet chest.
