This antique two-section Mizuya Tansu from the mid-Meiji period (1880s-1890s) is a superb example of traditional Japanese kitchen storage, blending functionality with elegance. Made from Hinoki (Japanese cypress) and Suginoki (Japanese cedar), the chest showcases the warm tones and durability of these woods, which were highly valued for their resistance to moisture and natural beauty.

The upper section features two large sliding glass doors, preserving the original glass from the Meiji era, a rare and significant detail. Inside, two removable shelves offer flexible storage options, perfect for displaying or organizing your fine glassware, crystal, or tableware. The glass doors add a modern, airy feel while allowing the contents to be viewed easily.

The bottom section is designed with a mix of sliding wooden doors, shelves, and four drawers at the base. Traditionally, this section held large water jars used in the kitchen, while the drawers and shelves provided storage for utensils and cookware. The variety of compartments in the lower section make it ideal for modern storage needs, offering ample space for linens, dinnerware, or household essentials.

While mostly original, the left-side vertical support has been replaced, ensuring structural integrity without compromising the chest’s historical value. This Mizuya Tansu not only embodies Japanese craftsmanship and practicality but also brings a sense of timeless beauty and organization to any home, making it a perfect statement piece for storing your dining essentials or decorative collections.
