This is an antique Japanese 2 section Mizuya, Kitchen chest from middle Meiji (1880's-1890's). It is made of Keyaki (Zelkova),Suginoki (Cryptomeria) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods.
Mizuya Dansu was used in the kitchen of a Japanese household for the storage of plates, utensils, food items and especially large pottery jars of water since running water was not readily available in the home.
It would make a great statement in any room of the house as well as functionality as a storage unit.
