Antique Japanese Mirror Chest — Wood, 1920, Taisho Era (SKU: 25M-568)
Antique Japanese Kyodai Mirror Chest — Kiri Wood, 1920s, Taisho Era
Where Beauty Meets Reflection, Rooted in Ritual
This elegant kyōdai (鏡台), or personal vanity mirror, captures the spirit of daily rituals from the Taisho period with quiet dignity and grace. Crafted from kiri (paulownia) wood, its finely grained surface glows with a warm, tiger-stripe figure, telling a story of nature’s quiet artistry. The mirror, adjustable and framed with slender vertical supports, was once the keeper of morning routines and moonlit reflections, perhaps lit by paper lanterns or shoji-filtered dawn.
Beneath the mirror, a chest of multiple drawers provided storage for delicate tools of self-care—kushi combs, kanzashi hairpins, or lacquered cosmetics. Even today, this mirror chest offers more than function—it offers calm intention. Whether gracing a dresser, studio, or gallery, it calls us to pause and see ourselves through a lens of time, craft, and quiet purpose.
